We are proud to announce the first ever Golds Gym Hot Yoga Studio!
This picture shows a Golds Gym We set up and is a Heating/Humidifing Machine- the standard Electric Hot Yoga package for 1000 Sq Feet. We suggest an Energy Recovery Ventilator of sufficient size be added using 30 CFM per Person as a basis of design. We now have an all in ALL IN ONE HOT YOGA ELECTRIC FURNACE/HUMIDIFIER FACTORY MADE IN ANY VOLTAGE .
The Biggest Mistake most Studio owners make is assuming that for their special environment they do not need a special insulated room.
You must eliminate all heat loss before you heat a room as the internal surfaces of the room warm before the room air will retain its heat. Just like a cold coffee cup makes for cold coffee.
Commercial room freezers operate at 40-70 degrees below an average indoor ambient temperature of 70 F. Food businesses do this with a Refrigerator section and a Walk-in Freezer comprised of 4-6" of urethane foam.
That is exactly how a yoga room should be constructed-containing a complete vapor barrier and a thermal insulation with radiant insulation which provides a R value of 40 or more.
Eliminate your heat loss and a small heater will do wonders.
Don't just throw any heater into a room and think it will just need to run longer to hit your target temperature. Help reduce carbon emissions and Global Warming by building only a responsible, efficient and affordabe Yoga room with lots of fresh air and precise humidity and temperature control. Steam and Sauna Rooms are so often poorly insulated when they should be constructed like a foam igloo with a concrete and tile Inner Skin or Wood if a Sauna. We are talking about taking steps to cut your power bill by 75%! Our new heater humidifier is now available.
Many yoga rooms are just thrown together with heat just dumped in and humidity pumped in with no attention to sealing up the space envelope, which eventually damages the building they are installed in.
Fiberglass insulation is mostly useless in hot humid environments and will harbor Mold and Mildew and Odor as much as a wet carpet. We have discovered and ripped out moldy fiberglass insulation in many locations hidden behind wall surfaces where fiberglass was sustaining a mold farm which only needs a little dirt and moisture to sustain Mold and Mildew.
At least you can see black mold on a carpet eventually.
We advocate SIP panel construction such as available through Murus Sip panels and other fine companies the panels have no voids and can be made to any specification.
A 6" Sip Panel room can come in 24' x 8' wall sections and be constructed in a few hours compared to typical 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 construction, with cam lock connections your yoga room is built in 1-2 days and ready for finishing.
This is only one aspect of what is discussed in our upcoming ebook-"how to build a hot yoga studio" to be released ver soon on Amazon .
For All yoga rooms it is suggested that the construction be foam insulated with spray-in foam and they covered with wall board if desired or simply painted with a zero voc paint when cured. Some will be covered with sheetrock or wood. Some sucessful designs incorporated 2 inches of high density foam and a layer or more of LOW E radiant insulation. Using a small forced air furnace and steam humidifier as the basis for the heat system. To Be even more eco you can use a solar collection cell and a fan coil of sufficient size witha biler backup. More deluxe rooms comprise of a Energy Recovery System with UV light banks to destroy odors, molds or pathogens and incorporate some of our proprietary controls to keep it all in balance.
We consider Energy Recovery Ventilators to be an essential component to any commercial system. Most Yoga facilities have Zero Fresh Air or at best a window that provides little relief to astonisingly high levels of CO2 often at 6000 PPM way higher than the average of 360 PPM in most unoccupied spaces.
For less expensive home hot yoga setups we offer portable radiant or fan forced heaters with outstanding portable humidifiers to make you sweat. Out new Focus beam heater is outstanding and as efficient as we have ever found.
We also use a 1" insulated floor surface from Zebra Mats with is both insulative and nonslip. No other surface offers the insulative value of the Zebra Mat High Compression Flooring and it makes a Huge difference in both energy savings and client comfort.
WE GET MANY CALLS FROM EXISTING STUDIOS THAT WOULD LIKE TO INCORPORATE A HOT YOGA PROGRAM INTO THEIR SCHEDULE.
We get requests for 2 basic products
1-Temporary, portable Heaters and Humidifiers to allow nearly any room to warm up and become a hot sweaty room. This approach doesnt alway work if the space has cooling pumped into it or if it acts like a heat sink and absorbs more heat than you can easily supply to it. Insulation always pays.
2-Installed Systems incorporating Fresh Air with Odor Control and Steam Humidification to efficiently and responsibly heat and humidify a yoga room that may or may not be dedicated to Hot Yoga use.
The one variable in Gyms and Multi-use Yoga rooms is Turn-over. How quickly can the room cool down and be used for Aerobics or a Vinyasa class that is not heated?
For a Forced Air System;
1-Exhaust fans-comprising of an intake and an exhaust fan-which is usually going to bring in unfiltered air and exhaust the room air. This method is Not economical if the next class session it to be a hot session.
2- ERV -Energy Recovery Ventilator will bring in and remove room air and gradually average it down to the outdoor conditions if left on long enough. For Purging a room it is not always as fast as an Intake and outtake exhaust fan but it will filter the air and be more efficient. The key to speedily evacuation use is the size of the Energy Recovery Ventilator’s Fan Capacity, it is typical to use a 900-1500 cfm fan for 1000-1500 square foot yoga rooms holding 30-50 clients for fresh air requirements. We do not use exhaust fans most of the time because in addition to the much higher energy costs with an In and Out exhaust fan the incoming air is not filtered and will draw in Allergens and impurities which the ERV filters out. The Heat Source must also be Large enough to quickly heat the space and have enough cooling -perhaps by a totally separate system with high pressure controls to rapidly cool and dehumidify the remaining air .
That increases the equipment cost by as much as 50% as larger air volumes mean larger ductwork and increased installation costs.
Radiant Heat Panels are popular but as they heat the floor beneath them they can take hours to stop radiating heat-like a warm oven so for a fast turnover in room use they are especially not practical to use for this application. If a Hydronic Ceiling Panel or or floor is used it may be possible to cool the room surfaces that have the tubing installed quickly However, it may be cost prohibitive to install a system such as that.
The best way to allow for a quick turnover in use is to have interior wall surfaces that have such little mass as to not “hold” temperatures similar to foam or even textiles. Most facilities will not find that to be practical but in stuudio design the practice of installing Gypsum Board or Sheetrock may be not a suitable as installing foam sheets covered with a more durable skin facing the yoga space such as a thin veneer of low density wood paneling or similar material. many food facilities freezers use FRP -fiberglass reinforced panels which would be noisy and not as attractive to the facility. The problem is simply that until the interior surface of the room changes to the desired temperature the room will be difficult to bring to the desired temperature.
When we are presented with a request to heat a room not designed and engineered to be heated that becomes the most prevalent question. “how much heat will be required to offset the loss through unknown wall floor and ceiling material which may or may not be insulated. Further , if a facility does not have a generous source of energy or fossil fuel it can be quite impossible to attain the conditions desired by the Yoga Studio.
What does it take to heat my regular room to hot yoga conditions?
First the existing systems such as Cooling and Outside Air need to be isolated from the yoga room with foam gasketed tight sealing dampers.
100-200 sq ft- 5 KW or 15,000 Btu. If the walls, floor and ceiling are cement or a similar heat sink it may take more, if they are spray foamed or made of a 6” Structurally Insulated Panel then 1kw may work exceptionally well and fast.
500-700 square feet will need 10 KW or 30,000 Btu. If the walls, floor and ceiling are cement or a similar heat sink it may take more, if they are spray foamed or made of a 6” Structurally Insulated Panel then 3 KW may work exceptionally well and fast.
800-1000 square feet will need 15 KW or as much as 40 KW or 45,000 or more Btu. If the walls, floor and ceiling are cement or a similar heat sink it may take more, if they are spray foamed or made of a 6” Structurally Insulated Panel then 6 KW may work exceptionally well and fast.
1200-1500 Square foot rooms what is used is usually 30 KW up to 40 KW and As I understand in the UK 90 KW. Understand Insulation selection and correct installation is critical to reducing energy waste and reducing the carbon footprint. One popular “World Headquarters” hot Yoga room in Los Angeles uses 170 KW because the owner has virtually no insulation. The same person holds a biannual training for 400 at the Raddison Hotel and uses 6 Chromolox 60 KW heaters and 30 KW of central AC Heat strips, such energy waste! So bad for the planet -Don’t be that guy.
Order a free standing yoga room comprised of 6” Structurally Insulated Panels including a 4” thick foam ceiling and floor -or spreay foam the entire room before finishing the walls and add a layer of Low-E insulating radiant barrier . Average cost for a 1000 Square foot room is 25,000 and the equipment would add an average of another 12-16,000. Operating costs drop from 1500 a month to about 200. Over the average lease period it will save much more than it costs.
The room will nearly heat itself each yoga student can create 1,500 Btu on their own and adding a small amount of heat and humidity will be all that is needed to offset the Energy Recovery Ventilators influx of fresh air on demand from the programmable Co2 control.
In Conclusion, most studios may want to “wet their feet” with a portable setup like our High Temp Portable Heaters (675) and a Humidifier (325) and that is fine for short term use. For more intensive and larger systems the entire structure should be considered. It is not cost effective or good for the planet to simply install a massive heat system and dump immoral amounts of energy into a leaky, poorly Insulated room for short term gain and long term loss.
